At 2017 hours on the night of 31 August 1943 Stirling EE946 took off from Lakenheath detailed to bomb Berlin. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. A Missing Research and Enquiry team reported: “the aircraft was attacked by a night fighter and crashed at Schlalch, 35 miles south west of Berlin.” All the crew members had been killed.
