Pilot Officer Davenport was the Navigator on 30th Squadron B-17 aircraft 41-24403 that was attacked by a Zero fighter while on a bombing mission to the Vunakanau Airfield at Rabaul. He was fatally wounded by an explosive round over the target area and died from shock and blood loss in hospital in Port Moresby following the aircraft’s safe return.
