On the night of 25 March 1942 Hampden P5398 took off from RAF Cottesmore for a night navigation training sortie. At 2110 hours the aircraft crashed and burned at Whittle Farm, Brockhampton, 3 miles east from the centre of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. All the crew were members killed.
