On 28 August 1918, Second Lieutenant Cummings was killed in the crash of Avro 504K aircraft 9282 near Minchinhampton Aerodrome. Flying in a south-easterly direction, Avro 9282 collided with Avro 8402 flown by Lieutenant Charles William Scott that was flying in a north-easterly direction at 90 degrees to 9282. 8402 turned to the left and the starboard wings came into contact, causing both machines to crash and both pilots were killed.
