On 26 November 1942, Kittyhawk A29-156 flown by Sergeant Cornfoot was in a formation over Cairns at a height of 1,200 feet detailed to carry out a non-operational practice exercise. The formation was heading in the direction of the gunnery range when the Pilot of another aircraft saw A29-156 dive steeply across his tail. The aircraft was rolling slowly and then went into a vertical dive towards the ground. It crashed into a house at 1630 EST hours and Sergeant Cornfoot was killed. The house was destroyed by fire but fortunately there was no one inside.
