On 9 March 1943, Spitfire JG747 went missing from a flight of six aircraft in transit from Gibraltar to Maison Blanche via the USAAF airfield at Le Sania, Oran. JG747 failed to arrive at Le Sania and no radio or distress messages were received and Sergeant Cope was reported missing.
