At 0100 hours on 22 July 1943, Avro Anson W2256 crashed two kms north east of the aerodrome, seriously injuring Leading Aircraftman Cook who was flying solo and later died.  The aircraft was attempting to land in heavy fog conditions at the conclusion of a night cross-country flight.
