On the night of 18/November 1943, Stirling EF128 took off from RAF Mildenhall at 1710 hours, detailed to bomb Mannheim, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft, and it failed to return to base. A missing Research & Enquiry team later reported: “the aircraft was shot down by a German night fighter near Lachalade, at approximately 2000 hours. Lachalade is 18.5 miles west of Verdun, France. Seven members of the crew were killed in the crash, and one became a Prisoner of War.
