On 26 August 1942 Spitfire BR466 took off from Landing Ground 173 on a non-operational flight. The Pilot tried a half roll out of an inverted position with insufficient height and crashed. Eye witnesses stated that the aircraft came over the aerodrome from the south west at about 1,000 feet. At 1,500 to 2,000 feet the aircraft started an upwards roll and stalled while on its back, crashing and killing Pilot Officer Colquhoun-Thomson.
