Spitfire HR 605 while carrying out an operational sweep on 22 December 1942 was shot down by Allied anti-aircraft gunners at Souk el Ehemis, Tunisia. Pilot Officer Christian was injured in the crash but died at 0912 hours that same day during emergency surgery.
