At 2240 hours on the night of 22 May 1943 Lancaster ED707 took off from East Kirkby detailed to bomb Dortmund, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at 0247 hours in the Waddenzee between Den Helder and the Isle of Texel. All the crew members lost their lives.
