On the 4th May 1945, Kittyhawk FL221 flown by Flying Officer Carter took off from Baru for delivery to 136 Maintenance Unit. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off at 1115 hours, and he was killed. The aircraft crashed into the courtyard of the No 3 Infantry Battalion Barracks, Royal Egyptian Army, one mile down Cairo Road from the Heliopolis airfield.
