At 0145 hours on the morning of 22 March 1945 Lancaster ME522 took off from Spilsby detailed to bomb the Deutsche Erdolwerke refinery at Hamburg, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. It was believed that the aircraft was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and crashed at 0406 hours at Hamburg-Freihafen, Germany. All the crew members were killed.
