At 2211 hours on the night of 30 March 1944 Lancaster LM436 took off from Spilsby detailed to bomb Nuremberg, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. When outbound the aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed at Freiensteinau, a small town 12 kms north west of Schluchtern, Germany. All the crew members were killed.
