At 2349 hours on the night of 30 August 1943 Halifax HR739 took off from Lissett detailed to bomb Monchengladbach, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down by a night fighter and crashed 4 kms south of Hechtel-Eksel (Limburg), 21kms north of Hassel, Germany. Four of the crew members were killed and three crew members became Prisoners of War.
