On the 25th March 1943, Spitfire P8387 flown by Flight Sergeant Brown took off from RAF Esabott, on a non-operational day training flight. It crashed into hills at 1030 hours at Dunstable, Wooler, Kirknewton, while flying in cloud and Flight Sergeant Brown was killed.
