On 18 October 1941, Leading Aircraftman Brooks took off from Alliston Aerodrome, near Camp Borden, at 0410 hours on a solo night flight. The take-off was with full flaps and after attaining a height of 300 feet, the aircraft executed a left turn and dived to the ground, killing Leading Aircraftman Brooks.
