On 14 May 1944, Sergeant Brittain, a Canteen Steward, was killed in a motor transport collision, on the main north/south road, approximately two miles south of the Middle Arm road. In the accident Flight Sergeant Kevin Leonard McNamara (5439), an Instrument Maker from No. 18 Squadron died of his injuries and other members were injured.
