At 1030 hours on 10 May 1942 Spitfire BP282 was scrambled at Luqa, Malta, and failed to return. It was last seen chasing a Junkers 88 out to sea and was thought to have crashed into the sea off the Grand Harbour, Valletta and was believed to have been hit by anti-aircraft fire.
