On 28 May 1943, Spitfire AR226 and Spitfire BR493 were among eight Spitfires detailed to intercept enemy fighters and bombers approaching Milingimbi, Northern Territory, from the North West. Interception was made at 1333 hours at a height of 22,000 feet, and although Flying Officer Blake was heard to speak over the radio, both aircraft were not seen again and failed to return to base. Searches found no trace of the missing aircraft or the Pilots.
