Lancaster ED725 took off from RAF Elsham Wolds at 2130 hours on the night of 17 August 1943 detailed to bomb Peenemunde, Germany. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The aircraft was shot down and crashed at Tarup on 18 August and all the crew members were killed. Twenty two aircraft from various squadrons were lost on this mission.
