On 3 July 1943, Aircraftman Class I Banks, a Flight Mechanic, was killed in a motor accident when off duty. He was a passenger in an Army jeep which overturned on the road from Gympie to his home town, Woombye, about 20 miles south of Gympie, and he was thrown out, striking his head on a bridge.
