On 3 July 1918, Air Mechanic Banks-Smith, flying as a Supernumerary, was killed when RE8 aircraft E140 crashed while diving on a target during training.  The airframe collapsed in the air and pilot Lieutenant George Robert Thompson RAF was also killed in the crash.
