On 5 August 1943, Leading Aircraftman Baird was killed in a motor cycle accident which occurred on the Sturt Highway approximately 2 miles east of the main gate at Forest Hill. There was a collision between the motorcycle that Leading Aircraftman Baird was riding and RAAF members walking along the road. Leading aircraftman Baird was employed in the servicing party of the Maintenance Squadron at Forest Hill.
