At 1550 hours on 23 March 1942, Hawker Demon A1-57 crashed three miles west of Point Cook. During a ground to air camera gun exercise, the practice aircraft dived too low and hit the camera gun being operated by Pilot Officer Andrus (Administrative & Special Duties) and he was killed in the accident. The aircraft crash landed and the crew were uninjured.
