On 14 August 1942, Fortress 41-2656 departed from Port Moresby at 0620 hours to carry out a lone patrol over the New Guinea area. Nothing was heard from the aircraft after take-off and it failed to return to base. The RAAF search organization had kept a persistent lookout for the missing aircraft but as no information had been obtained, it is presumed that there were no survivors.
