On the night of 30 June 1942 Hampden AD802 took off from RAF Saltby detailed to carry out a night navigation training exercise. The aircraft spun and crashed at 0230 hours near Shelford, 6 miles east north east from the centre of Nottingham. All the crew members were killed.
