On the 19 April 1945, Kittyhawk FX581 flown by Flying Officer Allan was one of a formation of six aircraft detailed to attack a river ford south west of Bologna, Italy. FX581 was flying Blue 2, and at about 1750 hours the aircraft was seen to peel off in a very steep dived bomb from approximately 9,000 feet. Other aircraft lost sight of FX581 in the dive and the aircraft was not seen again. A search of the area was obscured by smoke from an area near the target and it could have been the wreck of FX581.
