On 17 November 1943, Fairey Battle L2263 crashed four miles south south west of Sale, Victoria, and Flight Sergeant Alexander was killed. The aircraft was on an authorised gunnery detail and it was suspected that a glycol leak obscured his vision causing him to lose control and the aircraft to crash.
