On 26 September 1941, Spitfire X4843 was detailed to carry out a solo exercise in cloud flying in an area between Cheater and Wrexham. The aircraft stayed from the cloud flying area to the extent of 50 miles westward and it crashed when it hit Mount Arran in North Wales at a height of about 2,000 feet. Sergeant Mowat was killed. The weather and poor visibility may have been contributory factors to the crash. There was no evidence of radio failure, and the compass had not been checked for two months but this was not considered a contributory factor.
