Flight Lieutenant Rowlands previously served with No. 451 Squadron in North Africa.

On 25 March 1944, Spitfire MH837 flown by Flight Lieutenant Rowlands crashed 2.5 kms southwest of Daihut, Egypt and he was killed. The impact caused the aircraft to become buried in soft ground to a depth of about 30 feet.
